The Parish has a group of about forty people who have volunteered to read at Mass. Undertaking to read at Mass is both a responsible and a rewarding service to the parish community. It is a privilege to be asked to proclaim the word of God at Mass to one’s fellow parishioners. It can for example be quite a moving experience to take part in the reading of the Passion on Palm Sunday.
A reader is expected to have prepared the reading beforehand, with prayer and practice, thereby understanding what he is about to read out loud. One needs to be able to read with both feeling and reverence, and to project one’s voice with the aid of the microphone, so that all can hear and understand the word of God.
Some people may find the idea of standing in front of a full church rather daunting, but it may well be a way of boosting one’s confidence if unused to speaking in public. We welcome all clear speaking parishioners from the age of 12.
The Reader Coordinator is responsible for issuing the rota, each of which covers a period of about 10 weeks. The commitment to reading at Mass averages once every five weeks at the service preferred by the reader. Each reader is responsible for finding a replacement if unable to attend their Mass.
As people move away from the parish, there is a constant need for new readers. New recruits are given some training on basic techniques and procedures, so that they can give of their best. We have a training day for everyone every five years.
